Creating the Look: Vamp

Images by Joe Branske

Sherley has a look that will stop traffic, so I asked her if she would sit down and do a Vamp Look for me. I was lucky when she agreed.

I started by priming her skin for makeup application. Sherley, like many women with very dark pigmented skin, has very dry skin. I was certain to give her skin's moisture levels additional attention, using a medium weight moisturizer and primers that keep the skin moist while makeup is being applied.

Using a concealor brush, I applied a slightly lighter concealor where necessary to cover-up skin discoloration and unevenness. I followed this with a medium coat of cream foundation (to ensure plenty of moisture), and a dark loose powder to hold the foundation firm.

I applied a bare minimum of blush, since our focus with Sherley's look would be glamour-heavy eyes and lips.

I trimmed Sherley's eyebrows using a small pair of scissors and a clean mascara wand. I brushed the eyebrow hair up in one direction and carefully cut away the hairs that didn't fit within the arch. I darkened her eyebrows slightly using a dark black eyebrow liner.

I wanted really bright color on her lids - green to match the Vamp green velvet dress I'd found for the shoot. I started with a lighter green to lighten her eyelids so that the bright green I'd be applying would pop out. I lined the upper and lower lids with pitch black and lined the inner ledge of the lower lid with more black.

I covered her upper and lower lashes with a double coat of blackest-black mascara to create a good base for the fake eyelashes I'd be applying shortly.

I began applying the false eyelashes by adding a small amount of glue to the band on the lashes and letting it dry slightly before placing it on the ledge of her upper eyelid. Once applied, I asked her to blink her eyes several times to avoid eyelashes sticking to each other.

While her eyelashes dried, I applied lipliner and color. I wanted something that really smoldered. I decided on a dark, dark purple liner followed by an a dark, bright purple lipstick and clear lipgloss.

We wanted a complete look, so I purchased a red wig with v-cut bangs to accentuate the Vamp/Seductress look. Using a wide-toothed comb and lots of hairspray, I put the hairs of the wig where I wanted them and Sherley was almost ready to shoot!

Sherley changed into a dark green velvet dress and started working her stuff in front of the camera, and she really emulated that Vamp Look. What do you think?
