Creating the Look: Pinup

NEXT EXAMPLE

Images by bcj.

Right now, there is a huge retro makeup movement. A lot of reinvention is going on, especially with pinup looks from the 40's & 50's. With her purple, black, & blonde hair, Jaime has a great retro-reinterpretation thing going on. I decided to move with that.

I started, as I always do, by preparing the skin for makeup application. I used a couple primers to prepare the skin. I applied a strobe cream underneath Jaime's eyes to reflect light and help conceal darker undereye circles. I also applied M*A*C's Fix+ to create a makeup base so the makeup doesn't smudge.

Using a cosmetic sponge, I applied a light base of M*A*C's face & body foundation to her entire face. Jaime has great skin, so I only used the smallest amount of foundation. Foundation makes a great base for other makeup because it helps hold the makeup in place.

I added a touch of red/red cream blush to the apples of her cheeks - just barely noticeable, but enough to make her skin look super healthy and beautiful. I slightly darkened her eyebrows and gave them a definitive arch.

To give her a little bit of that Amy-Winehouse-Ate-A-Pinup look, I used a dark grey eyeshadow to create wings past her crease, accenting it with a bit of actual black/black powder eyeshadow. Blend, blend, blend so it doesn't look like crap. Using M*A*C's Fix+, I sprayed my eyeliner brush and dipped it in the black eyeshadow powder. I drew a very thick, dramatic line above the upper eyelashes.

I covered her upper lashes in a double coat of blackest-black mascara to really pull attention to her upper eyelids. I also applied a heavy coat of black mascara to her lower eyelashes, using a bit more than one normally would to create a really eye-heavy look. I also wanted to create a good base for the fake eyelashes I'd be applying shortly.

I used two pairs of eyelashes, laying them over each other to create a Mega-Eyelash Set. I began applying the false eyelashes by adding black glue to the edge of the eyelashes and letting it dry slightly before placing it on the ledge of her upper eyelid. Once applied, I asked her to blink her eyes several times to avoid eyelashes sticking to each other.

While her eyelashes dried, I applied lipliner and color. I used a sheer purple-y lipstick and a light nude lip liner, then followed with just a touch of hot purple-y lipgloss.

We wanted a complete look, so I then brought my attention to her hair. When I mentioned Amy Winehouse, Jaime didn't flich, so I decided to go with it. BIG BIG BIG!!! Lots of teasing, pulling, a bit of crying, and lot of hairspray, and Jaime's hair was huge.

Jaime brought the coolest tattoo-inspired undies and a little tummy-cincher. bcj. supplied the umbrella. She strutted out to the set. With a little wink and a smile, she broke our hearts, wouldn't you say?
