Creating the Look: Pinup

NEXT EXAMPLE

Images by bcj.

Christina has a 40's Burlesque Singer look. I wanted to create the pinup look one might find on a gal entertaining the troops in WWII.

I started, as I always do, by priming the skin for makeup application. I generally use several primers to prepare the skin. In Christina's case, I used a spray fixative that would hold the makeup firmly in place. The Pinup Look is very crisp and clean, so there's no room for makeup smudges or movement.

Using a cosmetic sponge, I applied a light coat of Mac's face & body foundation to her entire face. Christina has exceptionally smooth skin, so I applied a bare minimum of foundation, concentrating more on concealing small imperfections, such as darkness under the eyes or redness around the nose.

I brushed a bit of hot pink blush on her cheeks, giving her a bit of that "glow from inside." I darkened her eyebrows slightly, using a dark taupe-brown to add a bit of drama.

I used just a little browny-brown on the lids of her eyes, then I lined the top lid only in blackest black eyeliner, using an eyeliner brush. I sprayed additional fixative on the eyeliner powder to create a very controlled, pitch-black eye liner. I dusted her lower lashes with just a bit of brown eyeliner.

I covered her upper lashes in a double coat of blackest-black mascara to really pull attention to her upper eyelids. I also wanted to create a good base for the fake eyelashes I'd be applying shortly.

I began applying the false eyelashes by adding black glue to the edge of the eyelashes and letting it dry slightly before placing it on the ledge of her upper eyelid. Once applied, I asked her to blink her eyes several times to avoid eyelashes sticking to each other.

While her eyelashes dried, I applied lipliner and color. I wanted something slightly demure. I used a sheer peachy lipstick and a light nude lip liner, then followed with just a touch of hot pink lipgloss.

We wanted a complete look, so I then brought my attention to her hair. Christina came with rollers in her hair - a great start for a really volumninous, sexy pinup look! I pulled back one side of her hair and put a hot pink tigerlilie in it. I gently brushed and sprayed the remaining curls to give her that sort of uniform, smooth hair flip.

Then Christina changed into her pinup wardrobe and started posing in front of the camera. She really had that demure sex kitten thing down, don't you think?
