Tips: A Healthy Glow

Q: I am naturally quite fair, but I would like to have a more glowing, bronzed look for my upcoming audition. Do you have any suggestions on how I might attain a more "sun-kissed" look?

A: Remember that too much exposure to the sun or tanning beds can cause skin damage, and even skin cancer. Applying makeup can give you a radiant look without the harsh affects of the tanning.

If you want to get a sun-kissed look, it’s best to experiment with self-tanners and/or makeup tricks that will give you a naturally tanner appearance. You will need: a foundation the same color as your skin, a foundation 1 shade darker than your skin, bronzing powder, a shimmering golden pink liquid blush, a powder brush, and a sponge/foundation brush.

It’s important, as always, to begin with a clean, well-moisturized face. It is especially important, when trying to enhance the natural pigment of your skin, that you apply your makeup in a well-lit room. Rooms that have a lot of natural, outside light are the best.

Start by applying a foundation that is a single shade darker than your skin. If the slight shade difference is too apparent, mix with your regular shade. It’s important to make sure that when you mix foundations, they are from the same brand. This will help avoid streaks. Once you have applied the foundation, squeeze a dab (no larger than the size of a small pearl) of liquid blush onto your pointer finger. Evenly apply this to the apples of your cheeks, your temples and even a little under your chin. Remember, it’s easier to put on more than to remove too much.

Finally, lightly cover your face in the bronzing powder. This will not only set the foundation and blush, but also add some depth to the golden tone you are trying to achieve. For a darker appearance, add a second layer of bronzing powder. For a final touch, try a sheer lipgloss or a sweep of bronze eye shadow on the eyelids.

As always, experiment until you feel comfortable with your work.
